Riding on the Detroit Princess

Just a clarification, the pictures that I posted below are from Molly and I's recent excursion on the Detroit Princess, a riverboat that floats up and down the Detroit River. Molly bought us the tickets for my birthday, and we went on Saturday. The boat shoved off at 7:05, which we just barely made after some epic Detroit highway failure. It may have been a little intense for a bit, but we made it on the boat in the nick of time. I don't think we were the last people on the boat, but it was close.

Anyway the boat was 5 decks tall, each having its own ballroom. When we were there, all but one were reserved for private parties. The one we were on featured a Motown revival sort of group, The Prolifics (they have a hilariously terrible website here: theprolifics.com). Despite being a little cheesy, they were quite good, and definitely stylin'.

We had a buffet-style dinner on the boat, which was...serviceable. The potatoes were awesome, I can say that. I mistook a few food items for the wrong thing, which usually isn't a good sign. There was some kind of strawberry shortcake-like dessert that was outstanding though, I could have eaten those all night.

Eventually we made our way up to the 4th and 5th deck, one of which was the "party deck" - basically, just a DJ outside a big open area with tables and chairs. This was pretty entertaining not only because of the DJ and the chance to hang out and enjoy the river, but the private party occurring there was some kind of pastor celebration. Inside the ballroom we could hear a variety of strange things, including a woman singing a gospel song that we're pretty sure contained swearing, some ladies wearing far too see-through clothes for their body shape (it was a white celebration, so everybody had all white on), and a comedienne who was a little odd.

The cruise ended as it was getting dark, so I attempted to take a bunch of pictures of the Detroit/Windsor skyline at sunset. It was better in theory than it was in practice, and in looking at my photos I realize they are mostly of the RenCen. I suppose, that is most of the Detroit skyline. Anyway you can check them out here (no in-blog photos this time, mostly because I'm lazy):

Overall it was a pretty awesome time. So if you're looking for something to do in the D, and you like boats, motown, and strawberry shortcake desserts, put this on the list.
