Random Topic: Internet Dating
So for whatever reason tonight, as I was cleaning the fishtank, I was thinking about internet dating. I know, that's random, as I've never experience internet dating and obviously have no plans to, but it happened. I'm guessing that for most people in my era, unless you only hung out with the cheerleaders in college, know somebody who has gotten hooked up via the internet in some fashion. Being in the programming field, I know quite a few people who are married via eHarmony or some other internet dating site.
And I would also bet you know at least one person who refuses to try internet dating. Which is specifically what I was thinking about today. I'm not gonna lie here, back in the day when I first remember hearing about internet dating sites, I thought it was a joke, I thought it was for total losers. But that was a long time ago, and I used to wear yellow shoes, so all bets are off at that point.
I mean, think about it. Internet dating doesn't in any way "cheat" the dating system. I mean, it's not like you sign up and get married to the first person to click on your profile. Really, "internet dating" is a misleading name because the dating actually occurs in real life, outside of the internet. And the same people that hate on internet dating are probably fine with blind dates, right? Because that's a whole lot better than reading what someone writes about themselves, meeting a friend of a friend of a friend, where the person setting up the date really doesn't know jack about who this person is.
I've also heard that you have to be "desperate" to use internet dating sites. So then, what's the alternative? Go hang out the bar and talk to random guys/girls in hopes they are single and not serial killers? Get a job at your local coffee shop to hook up with the baristas? Hope that while in the frozen food section of Meijers, some gorgeous single person will ask you out for lunch? Because that's not desperate? Uh-huh, right.
So I'm just saying. If you're anti-internet dating, you need to think real hard about how internet dating is somehow less awkward, difficult, or lame than "classic" dating. Because once the internet part is over, you've still got the relationship part to go, and that's what you should be worried about.
And yeah, I really have no idea where this topic came from. But it seemed like a good blog topic. Perhaps I can put in my portfolio one day =)
